The research
As above mentioned, DRF ETS, has been operating according to its mission statement, since its constitution in the early 2000s, and throughout the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Operations mainly consisted of harvesting and donating funds to the University of Perugia, in order to implement research activities, together with diagnostic-therapeutic applications for type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The results of this important, and somehow essential support to diabetes research have been documented by dispensing research funds, as well as providing numerous young researcher training grants, to enable work in the laboratories and clinical mainly belonging to the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases of the University of Perugia, all crowned by scientific publications on research progress (see attachments 1 and 2).
Over the years, DRF has also promoted diffusion and educational initiatives in support to the prevention of diabetes. These activities are of particular importance considering that the trend of the disease is steadily and significantly increasing, especially in young generations.
Scientific research activities are based primarily on advanced technologies for the cure of T1D, as well as on the dissemination of scientific and educational material as well as initiatives for the prevention and good clinical practice for type 1 and 2 diabetes. These activities have been confirmed and laid out in the Memorandum of Understanding jointly signed by the University of Perugia and DRF on last December 2022.
The core of the Memorandum encompasses implementation of the technologies for the cell and molecular therapy of type 1 diabetes, using different stem cell types.
