The research team of the Laboratory for Endocrine and Biohybrid Cellular Transplants, Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia, led by Prof. Riccardo Calafiore, has been the site of the described research for years.

The team, which has been responsible for the development and execution of the research, as well as the discussion of the protocols and obtained results, is composed of both medical and biological staff.

In particular, the staff is composed of:

Senior Researcher: with decades of experience and expertise in cell biology, including the development of techniques for isolating pancreatic islets and umbilical cord mesenchymal cells, microencapsulation of cells, and the development of new capsule prototypes. Conducts transplantation studies in murine models of diabetes mellitus.

Molecular Biologist 1: with laboratory technique expertise in the study of cellular molecular mechanisms, focusing in particular on interactions between macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Molecular biology uses experimental techniques that allow for the detection, analysis, and amplification (qPCR) of nucleic acids.

Molecular Biologist 2: with expertise in cell cultures, immunofluorescence, tissue and cell histology, and analysis of cellular populations using flow cytometry techniques. Also has skills in biotechnology.

Bioengineer: in recent times, study protocols have been carried out in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering for the development of devices (scaffolds), also using 3D printers, one of which is present in the laboratory.

In recent years, the team has also been joined by research doctoral students in the field of medical biotechnology and translational medicine.
